I am soon to be finishing my degree, and I am in a similar situation as that person whose father makes a lot of money and now has a second family, but didn’t help at all with their education. I don’t feel like I’m owed anything, but I recently found out that he’s been telling our extended…

As much as this sucks, I’m glad I’m not the only one the first email spoke to. And I fully appreciate this post as well. My dad told all our relatives that I used him, after he gave me $800/yr for 3 of the college years (clearly not close to the full bill). I received a “bill” from him a month after I was married, 3 years after school, for text books I charged and a single grocery bill.

The fun part is that I found out about the blame when no relatives from his side wanted to come to my wedding, that I paid for. The REALLY FUN PART came when I tried to buy a house and found he had me listed as a “joint” cardholder on a card I didn’t have, but he’d defaulted on. Karma is a bitch, because I worked AT the credit card facility at the time, and was able to pull documents from his settlement for the mortgage company… Then sent the copies of them and the mortgage process to him, without saying anything.

Almost 10 years later, he has been through rehab and now just treats me as a peer. We never talk about that time. I am ok with that. In fact, of all the siblings and family, I “get” my minor brothers if he dies. That, to me, is the ultimate compliment.
